49 GRAPES

Grapes are rich in polyphenols, compounds that protect the heart and circulation and help lower cholesterol. They are high in calories so are useful in a gluten-free diet.

Most of the beneficial compounds are in grape skins. Black, purple, and red varieties contain much higher levels of the dark pigments (anthocyanins) and the flavonoid quercetin than green grapes. Both of these may help prevent heart and cardiovascular disease and cancer. Two more compounds in grapes—resveratrol and tannins—have been linked to the prevention or inhibition of cancer and heart disease, degenerative nerve disease, viral infections, and Alzheimer’s disease. With their relatively high sugar content, grapes are higher in carbohydrate and calories than many other fruits, and so they can be a useful source of carbs in a gluten-free diet. Raisins and golden raisins (dried grapes) are a concentrated form of the fruit with a high carb and good iron content but little vitamin C.

Rich source of a variety of plant compounds.

Encourage a healthy cardiovascular system, improve blood cholesterol, and have antiblood-clotting effect.

Antiviral and antifungal action.
